It is safe to discharge total hip replacement patients after just two days, if new research is to be believed.
A study, published in Springer's Hospital for Special Surgery Journal revealed that fast tracking total hip replacement patients is safe practice.
Generally healthy patients who undergo total hip replacement could be discharged after just two days, as opposed to the three to six days they are usually kept in.
"Before this study, we were uncertain how safe it would be to discharge patients within two days after a total hip replacement, but based on this study, we now know that it is safe," said Lawrence Gulotta, first author on the study.
In other news, a University of Nebraska study has revealed that a polymer-based imaging test could be used to detect joint replacement failures early on.
The research, published in journal Molecular Pharmaceutics, could allow the problem to be treated early on, meaning patients may avoid further surgery.
