Research could make cancer cells more susceptible to chemotherapy

Scientists have uncovered a method of sensitising muscle-invasive bladder cancer cells to they are more susceptible to chemotherapy.
Researchers at the University of California Davis Cancer Center heightened the production of a microRNA found in bladder cancer cell lines, encoded for by the gene miR-34a.
It was found that this resulted in more of the cells being killed off by cisplatin - a standard chemotherapy drug used to combat many different types of cancer.
Ralph deVere White, of the centre, said: "If we can prove what is causing chemotherapy resistance in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer, American ingenuity will come up with ways to overcome it."
In other news, childhood cancer survivors are at a higher risk of developing further tumours later in life, research from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study showed.
Some 9.6 per cent of childhood cancer survivors went on to develop new tumours unrelated to their original cancer, found the St Jude Children's Research Hospital team.
