A new gene therapy could be used to successfully treat heart failure, a study has indicated.
Researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine found the condition of heart failure patients could be stabilised or even improved through the use of SERCA2a therapy.
The therapy, which was found to be safe, was also revealed to decrease the number of hospitalisation for cardiovascular problems.
Roger J Hajjar, of the centre, said: "Even though heart failure mortality has decreased over the last decade with the help of standard pharmacological and device therapies, patients with advanced heart failure continue to die at high rates."
This follows news that drug ticagrelor has the potential to prevent one in five heart attack deaths if it was widely adopted, according to research presented at the British Cardiovascular Society annual scientific conference in Manchester.
Although the medication has been available since December 2010, it has not yet been invested in by many institutions as it costs more than standard treatment clopidogrel.
