Thursday 23rd June 2011
Researchers have identified a pathway of speech recognition in the brains of humans.
Authors believe results of the study could offer important insights into what can happen when an individual has difficulty speaking or understanding the speech of others.
In the study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, researchers defined the three different processing stages a human brain needs to identify sounds such as speech.
Josef Rauschecker, of Georgetown University Medical Center, said: "These sounds, such as speech, are vitally important to humans, and it is critical that we understand how they are processed in the human brain."
This follows comments by Dr Lisa Perkins who said that a growing body of research indicates that speech therapists have a role to play in reducing youth offending.
According to the expert, early intervention by way of promoting good communication, language and listening skills among children could reduce their risk of getting into trouble with the law.
