Mystery ingredient and caffeine give coffee Alzheimer's-fighting property

An unidentified component of coffee interacts with the caffeine in the beverage, possibly explaining why regular consumption of the hot drink protects against Alzheimer's disease.
Research published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease found that the interaction between the mystery ingredient and the caffeine heightens blood levels of a critical growth factor (GCSF) believed to combat Alzheimer's disease
In the study on mice, while caffeinated coffee was seen to greatly increase GCSF levels in the blood, neither caffeine alone or decaffeinated coffee did so.
Dr. Chuanhai Cao, lead author of the study, explained: "Caffeinated coffee provides a natural increase in blood GCSF levels.
"The exact way that this occurs is not understood. There is a synergistic interaction between caffeine and some mystery component of coffee that provides this beneficial increase in blood GCSF levels."
Meanwhile, a Harvard-led study has revealed that men who drank plenty of coffee were at a lower risk of developing a lethal form of prostate cancer.
