Children who have normal CT scans after experiencing blunt head trauma do not need to be hospitalised, according to new research.
A study published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine found that of thousands of children who had normal CT scans after mild blunt head trauma, less than one per cent had subsequent abnormal scans.
Moreover, none of the children were in need of neurosurgical intervention.
Study leader James Homes, of the University of California Davis School of Medicine, said: "Sending these patients home with their parents not only provides good, safe care but it also saves costs. It is a win for everyone concerned."
Meanwhile, researchers at the University of Waikato in New Zealand are investigating the long term effect of traumatic brain injury on children, reports HealthCanal.com.
Scientists will look at the social behaviour and educational-related functioning following the occurrence of a traumatic brain injury.
