People with arthritis should be encouraged to partake in gentle exercise, one physiotherapist has said.
Alison Wyndham, physiotherapist and founder of the Wyndham Centres, has said that exercise ensures that joints keep moving and muscles are strengthened.
In addition, exercise encourages the production of endorphins, giving patients an overall feeling of wellbeing.
She advised that walking "is probably the best exercise".
"If you have shoulder problems, you can bring in gentle neck and shoulder exercises and go through the motions of each movement. The more exercise you have in a gentle way, the better," explained Ms Wyndham.
This comes after research published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery revealed that depression can worsen the symptoms of knee arthritis in older adults.
The impact of depression was particularly felt in individuals with mild to moderate knee arthritis.
Authors noted that symptoms often stretched beyond what could be seen on X-Rays, meaning that the condition could be difficult for a doctor to treat.
