Refer an Audiologist
Thursday 9th June 2011
Occupational therapists may be able to spot attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in young children earlier by referring them for a brain scan.
A recent study published in the Clinical Neuropsychologist has shown a link between the brain development of preschool children and ADHD symptoms.
The study, carried out at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, is one of the first of its kind to focus on preschool children, where previous studies have focused on those aged seven and over.
Commenting on the findings, lead study author Dr Mark Mahone underlined the importance of early treatment for ADHD, perhaps by those in occupational therapy jobs.
"Clinically, this abnormal brain development sets the stage for the symptoms of ADHD that contribute to cognitive challenges and problems in school," he explained. "Earlier identification and treatment of children ... may minimise the impact of ADHD."
Suffering from ADHD significantly increases the risk of smoking and substance abuse in young adulthood, according to recent data published by the Massachusetts General Hospital.
