Cervical cancer is now "almost completely avoidable", according to one expert.
Robert Marsh, chief executive officer of The Eve Appeal, cited HPV vaccinations and the UK's national screening programme as vital in lowering rates of cervical cancer.
"Cervical Screening is estimated to save over 4,000 lives each year in the UK, so it is vitally important for all women to attend when invited," he said.
However, he added that it is important "to break down the wall of embarrassment" that prevents some women, particularly those of a younger age, from attending screening sessions.
These comments come on Cervical Screening Awareness Week (June 6th to 12th).
Twenty per cent of women in the UK are still failing to attend cervical screening, according to Jo's Trust.
Moreover, public knowledge of issues such as the causes of cervical abnormalities, cervical cancer and treatment is fairly low, according to the trust, making the awareness week important for raising the public profile of the condition.
