A birth control pill for men is being researched by Columbia University Medical Center.
If successful, the pill will be the first non-steroidal, oral contraceptive for men, according to the study published in journal Endocrinology.
A low dose compound was found to cause sterility in mice, stopping sperm production with no apparent side effects.
Moreover, when administration of the compound was halted, fertility returned to normal.
First author Sanny S W Chung, said: "We have seen no side effects, so far, and our mice have been mating quite happily.
"Our compound ... can be taken orally as a pill, avoiding the injection process. It also appears to have a very rapid effect on sperm production and an even more rapid recovery when fertility is desired."
Currently, the contraceptive pill taken by women is the most popular form of contraception in the UK. This is over 99 per cent effective when taken properly.
