A high-fat diet during pregnancy could increase the chance of giving birth to a stillborn infant, a study has shown.
Research published in journal Endocrinology found that consuming a high-fat diet decreases blood flow from the mother to the placenta, which affects the nourishment of the foetus.
In those with a high fat diet, blood flow was seen to decrease from the uterus to the placenta by 38 per cent. It was also associated with an elevation in placental inflammation.
Principle investigator Antonio Frias, of Oregon Health & Science University, said: "The high-calorie, high-fat diet common in our society has negative effects on placental function and may be a significant contributor to adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as stillbirth."
Meanwhile, a team at the University of Illinois has revealed that pregnant women who eat high fat foods could be increasing their child's risk of future diabetes.
