Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 2nd June 2011
Children consume more vegetables when allowed to freely choose the ones they want to eat, a study has found.
Research from the University of Granada revealed that children eat up to 80 per cent more vegetables when given the choice.
Children who were allowed to choose their vegetables consumed 20 grams more, which represents 40 grams per day including lunch and dinner.
Additionally, the bitter taste of glucosinolate was linked to the rejection of certain vegetables including spinach, cabbage, collard greens, onions, chard and broccoli.
In other news, a lack of sleep has been associated with childhood obesity, according to findings published on bmj.com.
Researchers used The Family Lifestyle, Activity, Movement and Eating (Flame) New Zealand Study, which measured body mass index and composition every six months from the ages of three to seven.
There was found to be a consistent link between shorter sleep duration and higher body weight.
