An increased level of stress does is not a risk factor for multiple sclerosis (MS), according to new research which contradicts previous findings.
Stressful life events have been known to increase the chance of MS episodes, but it was uncertain as to whether stress heightens the chance of the development of the disease, according to authors of the study published in journal Neurology.
Two groups of nurses were followed in the long-term study, and were asked to report general home and work stress as well as stressful events during childhood or teenage years, such as physical or sexual abuse.
There was found to be no association between higher levels of stress and development of MS.
Study author Trond Riise commented: "This rules out stress as a major risk factor for MS. Future research can now focus on repeated and more fine-tuned measures of stress."
Meanwhile, a tool has been developed as Mayo Clinic which is designed to track the progress of MS in each patient, according to findings presented at the American Academy of Neurology meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.
