Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 26th May 2011
Overweight women who reduce their body weight by more than 15 per cent experience a dramatic rise in vitamin D levels, research has shown.
A study found that those who lost five to ten per cent of their body weight saw a small increase in blood levels of vitamin D in comparison to those who dropped more than 15 per cent and experienced almost a threefold increase in the nutrient.
Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption, helps prevent osteoporosis, influences cell growth, neuromuscular and immune function.
Caitlin Mason, lead author of the paper published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, explained: "Since vitamin D is generally lower in persons with obesity, it is possible that low vitamin D could account, in part, for the link between obesity and diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes."
This follows findings in the Journal of Adolescent Health which found that the majority of obese adolescents lack vitamin D.
