Pregnant women who consume a high fat diet could be putting their child at risk of future diabetes, research has shown.
Exposure to a high-fat diet before birth was found to modify the gene expression in the livers of offspring, meaning they are more likely to produce too much glucose, according to the findings presented in the Journal of Physiology.
This could potentially causing early insulin resistance and diabetes, warn the University of Illinois researchers.
Yuan-Xiang Pan, of the university, said that it was previously unknown that a mother's diet during pregnancy could have a long term effect on her child's glucose production.
"Now that we know this, we urge pregnant women to eat a balanced low-fat diet that follows government guidelines. Then a woman can prime her child for a healthy life instead of future medical struggles," he said.
In other news, risk of newborn death was seen to be cut in half when the pregnancy reaches 39 weeks in a study published in journal Obstetics & Gynecology.
