A new survey has found varying results in how rheumatologists and obstetricians advise patients on safe rheumatology treatments during pregnancy.
The UK study showed that 32 per cent of rheumatologists and 18 per cent of obstetricians would opt to continue treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) during pregnancy.
Furthermore, 92 per cent of rheumatologists would discontinue anti-TNF treatment during pregnancy, in comparison to just over half of obstetricians.
In addition, 95 per cent of rheumatologists compared to 52 per cent of obstetricians would stop treatment with rituximab.
Dr Sonia Panchal, University Hospital of Leicester NHS Trust, said: "Whilst healthcare practitioners are aware that they should consult a specialist when unsure of a treatment decision, best practice guidelines, developed with consensus between rheumatologists, obstetricians and specialist nurses would benefit healthcare practitioners in the UK and Europe greatly."
This follows advice from Alison Wyndham, director of the Wyndham Centre, who said that rheumatoid arthritis patients who have difficulty sleeping should consume plenty of green vegetables.
