Doctors have developed a new tool to monitor the improvement of depression in patients that focuses on how the patient is feeling.
The Remission Evaluation and Mood Inventory Tool, or REMIT, comprises of five questions which tackle the individual's positive feelings rather than just a lack of depressive symptoms, in a study published in journal General Hospital Psychiatry.
These include "a patient's feeling that they are returning to 'normal,' their sense of well-being, their satisfaction with life and their ability to cope with life's ups and downs," explains lead author Donald E Nease Jr.
The authors, from the University of Michigan Health System, explained that the official definition of when a patient's symptoms are in remission does not always concur with whether they are completely recovered.
In other news, clinicians should consider depression a risk factor for lack of adherence to medication for chronic illnesses, indicates a study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
