The list of side effects that accompany medications have expanded vastly, averaging 70 reactions per drug, according to a US study.
An average label now contains 70 different side effects, with the most commonly prescribed medications coming with an average 100 side effects, according to the study published in journal Archives of Internal Medicine.
Additionally, one label was seen to have 525 possible reactions, with the upper range being reported to be remarkably high by the authors from the Regenstrief Institute and the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Lead author Jon Duke said: "Having a high number of side effects on a drug's label should not suggest that the drug is unsafe. In fact, much of this labelling has less to do with true toxicity than with protecting manufacturers from potential lawsuits."
This follows a study published in journal Health Affairs which revealed an association between the rise of rogue online pharmacies and an increase in prescription drug abuse.
