Consuming dietary inorganic nitrate could reduce the heart dysfunction caused by an anti-cancer drug, a study has suggested.
Anti-cancer drug doxorubicin is often used in chemotherapy due to its cancer-fighting properties, but is also know to lead to permanent heart damage.
Research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that mice treated with dietary inorganic nitrate had a lesser risk of heart dysfunction caused by the drug.
Inorganic nitrate is found in leafy greens, spinach and lettuce.
Principal investigator Rakesh C Kukreja said: "Inorganic nitrate is a water-soluble and very inexpensive chemical that could be ideal for long-term oral administration during the course of cancer treatment with doxorubicin."
In other news, dairy products may not be as detrimental to heart health as was previously believed, according to research published in journal Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases.
The amount of dairy consumed was found to have no relation to heart attack risk.
