Scientists have developed an implant which could bring relief to chronic back pain sufferers in the form of a jab.
University of Manchester researchers worked with microgel particles, which have previously been seen to transform into a gel which could repair the mechanical properties of damaged model intervertebral disks.
Scientists in this latest study, published in journal Soft Matter, succeeded in linking the particles together in order to form injectable and durable elastic gels which can sustain large changes in shape without breaking.
Lead researcher Dr Saunders said: "Our team has made a breakthrough through innovative materials design that brings the prospect of an injectable gel for treating degeneration of the intervertebral disc a step closer."
This breakthrough comes in the run up to Spinal Cord Injuries Awareness day tomorrow (May 20th) which has been organised by prominent charities Back Up, the Spinal Injuries Association, Spinal Injuries Scotland, Aspire and Spinal Research.
