Register as an Dietitian
Wednesday 18th May 2011
Women who gain more weight than is recommended during pregnancy have a higher chance of post-natal obesity, putting them at risk of related health problems, research has found.
A team at the University of Bristol found that women who gained more than the recommended weight during pregnancy were three times are likely to be overweight, obese or develop central adiposity.
Moreover, women whose weight gain was low during pregnancy had a lesser risk of being overweight, obese or develop associated health problems, according to the study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Author Dr Abigail Fraser said: "Our findings suggest that regular monitoring of weight in pregnancy may need to be reconsidered because it provides a window of opportunity to prevent health problems later in life."
Meanwhile, research conducted at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found that people categorised as overweight during middle age have a higher risk of getting dementia later on.
