Seeing first choice of doctor 'cuts hospital emergency admission'

Patients who see their first choice of doctor are much less likely to admit themselves to a hospital emergency department, research has found.
A study carried out at the University of Leicester found that hospital emergency admission rates were reduced when patients were able to see their first choice of physician in the doctor's surgery, according to the study published in Emergency Medical Journal.
Researcher Dr John Bankart said: "We concluded that the patient characteristics of deprivation, age, ethnicity and gender are important predictors of admission rates. Larger practices and greater distance from a hospital have lower admission rates."
In other news, younger doctors were found to rely more heavily on medications and be less likely to give lifestyle advice than their older colleagues.
Findings published in the International Journal of Clinical Practise revealed that doctors over the age of 55 gave the highest amount of smoking cessation advice, with and exercise recommendations most prevalent in those aged 46 to 55.
