Heart damage in children who suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) could be prevented by a simple surgical procedure, it has been found.
Research presented at the American Thoracic Society 2011 International Conference in Denver indicated that removing enlarged tonsils and adenoids could help prevent high blood pressure and heart damage in children with the condition.
Children with large tonsils and adenoids are more prone to developing OSA, according to the study's lead author Lisa Burns, of the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
"Our study emphasizes the importance of treating severe sleep apnoea in order to prevent persistent elevation in blood pressure and end-organ damage," she said.
Sleep apnoea is condition in which the muscles and soft tissues in the throat relax and collapse sufficiently to cause complete blockage of the airway. When this occurs for ten seconds or more it becomes an apnoea.
