Patients at a high risk of stroke are the least likely to comply with their prescribed statin treatment, research has revealed.
After one year, just 48 per cent of patients prescribed statins were taking the medication consistently, according to scientists at North Carolina State University.
It was also revealed in the study, published in Medical Decision Making, that only 27 per cent of patients continued to take their statins correctly after a decade.
Dr Brian Denton, co-author, said: "These findings suggest that adherence-improving interventions - such as patient education or electronic reminders to take medications - can significantly improve the quality and length of life, particularly for high-risk patients."
In other news, susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) could be used to better identify stroke, according to research conducted at the University of California.
When SWI was used alongside MRI in stroke detection, the gap between the cardiovascular event and treatment was shortened, benefitting the patient.
