A lack of exercise can lead to future heart problems in healthy children as young as nine, it has been revealed.
Children who are more physically active have a lower overall score for cardiovascular disease than those who undertake lower amounts, according to the findings published in journal Acta Paediatrica.
In the participating children, who had an average age of 9.8 years, the boys were much more active than the girls. Although there were no significant differences between the genders in terms of blood pressure, the resting heart rate was much higher in the girls.
Furthermore, the boys were seen to have a lower body fat mass than the girls, with 6.3kg compared to 8.3kg.
Lead author Dr Tina Tanha, of Skane University Hospital in Sweden, said: "It is well known that physical inactivity in adults is associated with a wide range of diseases and all causes of death.
"We believe that our study now demonstrates a clear clinical association between physical inactivity and multiple CVD risk factors in children."
In other news, genetic defects have been shown to be significant in cardiac death in a new study published in journal Science Translational Medicine.
