A rise in rogue online pharmacies has been linked to an increase in prescription drug abuse, a study has shown.
Research published online in journal Health Affairs found that in the US states with the fastest expansion of high-speed internet, there was also the biggest increase in admissions from treatment of prescription drug abuse.
Senior author Dana Goldman said that it is well known these drugs, including painkillers, sedatives, stimulants and tranquillisers, are widely available on the internet.
"We know we face a growing problem with prescription drug abuse in the United States. One need only look at statistics for college campuses, where prescription drugs are fast replacing illegal substances, to see the magnitude of the problem," she explained.
In other news, research published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine has warned that depression is a major risk factor for patients failing to comply with their treatment for chronic illnesses.
