Lansley announces 60 new clinical fellowships

At least sixty new clinical fellowships are to be created this year, health secretary Andrew Lansley has announced.
The drive is part of an effort by the National Leadership Council to improve clinical leadership.
These new fellowships are to involve on-the-job clinical leadership and management training and provide opportunities for physicians to have tailored leadership in an effort to improve services.
Multidisciplinary and collaborative learning among all health care professionals will also be encouraged. Moreover, an evaluation on improvements to service alongside the personal developments will be compiled to contribute to future leadership schemes.
Mr Lansley announced: "We will be creating at least sixty more fellowships, open to all clinicians in all healthcare settings who will be able to improve services for patients, provide better value for money and drive out waste."
This follows research conducted at the Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center that found that an increase in the number of family physicians was linked to a decrease in hospital readmissions.
