Genetic defects could be significant in sudden cardiac death, according to a new study.
A study published in journal Science Translational Medicine found that the function of specific genetic mutations can predict the risk of sudden death and other cardiac events in people with Long QT.
According to the University of Rochester scientists, this finding could bring hope to many with Long QT - an inherited heart rhythm disorder.
Senior author Coeli Lopes said: "To our knowledge, this is the first time anyone’s linked the activity of specific mutations to actual risk in patients.
"We're literally going from studying mutant proteins in cells in the lab to risk assessment in the clinic, which is an exciting and very promising concept."
In other news, researchers from Columbia University have developed an innovative new way to patch a damage heart which enables the tissue to repair itself.
