Genes rather than race determine how successfully a donor kidney works after being transplanted, according to a new study.
Scientists at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center endeavoured to discover why kidneys taken from black donors rather than non-black donors did not work as well in a study published in the American Journal of Transplantation.
It was found that the genetic profile of the donor continues to have an effect on the survival after transplant.
Lead investigator Barry I Freedman said: "We now know that these organs aren't failing because they came from black donors, but rather because they came from individuals with two copies of a specific recessive gene."
Meanwhile, research published online in the American Journal of Transplantation revealed that more that many more organs could be available for transplant if brain dead patients were better cared for.
More than double the number of lungs, and almost 50 per cent more kidneys could be retrieved if hospital doctors were to work with organ procurement organisation coordinators for improved preservation.
