LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, or 'bad cholesterol' may not be all negative, a new study has indicated.
It is believed that LDL builds up in the walls of arteries, leading to heart attacks and heart disease, while HDL (high-density lipoprotein), or 'good cholesterol', helps to remove this.
However, new research published in the Journal of Gerontology indicates that LDL is needed for building up muscles.
The study from Texas A&M University revealed that participants with the most LDL in their system gained the most muscle mass after exercising.
This comes after research at Flordia State University revealed that regularly eating apples can lower bad cholesterol.
A group of older women added an apple a day to their diet. This was seen to lower LDL cholesterol by 23 per cent, while heightening HDL cholesterol by four per cent.
Moreover, those who added the apple to their diet lost an average of 3.3 pounds over the duration of the year.
