Activities such as drinking coffee and nose blowing temporarily increase the risk of rupturing a brain aneurysm and experiencing a stroke, a study reports.
Researchers identified eight factors which can trigger a subarachnoid hemorrhage and identified the population attributable risk - the fraction of these incidences that can be explained by a particular trigger.
According to the findings, published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association, drinking coffee comes top of the list, with 10.6 per cent population attributable risk.
Undertaking vigorous physical exercise came second with 7.9 per cent and nose blowing was seen to be the third highest risk factor, being the trigger for 5.4 per cent.
Also featuring on the list is sexual intercourse, drinking cola, straining to defecate, being angry and being startled.
Lead author Monique H M Vlak explained: "All of the triggers induce a sudden and short increase in blood pressure, which seems a possible common cause for aneurysmal rupture."
Subarachnoid haemorrhages account for just five per cent of all strokes but are a leading cause of death in the condition, being accountable for a quarter of all deaths relating to stroke.
