Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) could be used to detect stroke, potentially improving the effectiveness of treatment, a study has shown.
When SWI accompanied MRI in stroke detection, the gap between the event and treatment was improved, as was the overall recovery, according to researchers at the University of California.
Typically, SWI is used as a secondary tool to analyse brain haemorrhages and identify clots with middle cerebral artery infarctions.
Lead author Dr Mark D Mamlouk explained that SWI could be utilised as part of the MRI brain protocols to better detect the origin of the stroke.
"Using SWI in patients with cerebral infarctions will decrease further imaging and its associated costs and radiation exposure, but more importantly this imaging technique will guide direct management in a timelier manner," he added.
In other news, MRI machines are also able to detect whether a patient is suffering from endometrial or cervical cancer, according to research presented at the American Roentgen Ray Society Annual Meeting in Chicago.
