MRI machines identify endometrial and cervical cancer

MRI machines are able to detect whether a patient has endometrial or cervical cancer, a new study has indicated.
Research presented at the American Roentgen Ray Society Annual Meeting in Chicago found that an MRI was able to detect the primary site of cancer in 79 per cent of cases in which biopsy results were inconclusive.
Heather He, from the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, explained that in approximately three per cent of cases, there is a difficulty in identifying the primary cancer site.
"Knowing the primary cancer site means that we can give the patients the most appropriate therapy and save some patients from unnecessary surgery," she explained.
In other news, MRI scans could in future be used to detect mild cognitive impairment that is likely to progress into Alzheimer's disease.
Research published in the journal Radiology found that the scanners picked up on the cortical thinning associated with the condition.
