New test detects joint replacement failure early on

Joint replacement failures could be detected early on with the implementation of a new test, researchers have indicated.
A study at the University of Nebraska revealed that a polymer-based system for imaging tests identified the inflammation characteristic of joint replacement failure.
The research, published in journal Molecular Pharmaceutics, indicates that the problem could be treated early on so patients could avoid further surgery.
Authors said: "Subsequent therapeutic interventions at this stage, would permit prolongation of the lifetime of the implant with improved patient outcomes."
This follows findings published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery that showed depression worsens the symptoms of knee arthritis is older people.
Individuals with mild to moderate knee arthritis were seen to particularly feel the impact of depression.
According to the author Tae Kyun Kim, symptoms often stretch beyond what is visible in the X-Rays, meaning the condition can be difficult for the doctor to treat.
