Negative economic conditions have led to an increase in mental illness, experts have said.
Kevin Friery, clinical director at Right Corecare, said that the recession has brought an "instability and loss of control" which could have a significant impact on mental health.
"If [people] feel that their employment is threatened or that their projected promotion and rise through the ranks isn't going to happen because there is a block on recruitment and promotions, they feel blocked," he said.
Mr Friery added that financial concern makes people more likely to commit suicide, even if they are not badly in debt.
These comments follow a study in the American Journal of Public Health which revealed a close correlation between the state of the economy and suicide in adults.
Additionally, 25 to 65 year olds were seen to fit in with this correlation well, while those younger or older did not.
