The majority of obese adolescents lack vitamin D, according to a new study.
Research published in the Journal of Adolescent Health screened obese adolescents for vitamin D status by measuring the level in their blood.
Low vitamin D was seen in all females, with 72 per cent deficient and 28 per cent classed as insufficient. Moreover, 91 per cent of the males also had low vitamin D status, with 69 per cent seen to be deficient and 22 per cent insufficient.
Researcher Zeev Harel said: "Based on the findings from this study, we are calling for increased surveillance of obese adolescents whose vitamin D levels do not normalize after initial course of treatment. In addition, prospective studies are needed to evaluate whether normalizing vitamin D levels in obese adolescents will help lower the health risks associated with obesity."
Meanwhile, research published in the Archives of Neurology reported that Parkinson's patients in the early stages of the disease could be at a higher risk of several conditions due to a Vitamin D insufficiency.
