A new imaging agent for use in computed tomography (CT) could soon be in use, after scientists reported progress in a study.
The research, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, revealed the development of a process for producing large quantities of the new imaging agent.
Additionally, research has indicated that the imaging agent, which would potentially CT scans involving heart disease, breast cancer and other conditions, is safe for use.
Imaging agents used in diagnosing disease make structures within the body more visible. However, those currently in use do not stay in the body very long or are extremely expensive.
The new agent, a tantalum oxide nanoparticle, is inexpensive, stays in the body for a long time and, according to the authors, exhibited "remarkable performances".
Meanwhile, research published in journal Radiology, found that unnecessary imaging procedure used when patients are transferred from one hospital to another, could be cut through the use of a simple CD-ROM.
