A molecule has been found to play an essential role in autoimmune diseases, and is believed to be key in the development of new treatments for such conditions, including multiple sclerosis.
Researchers from Thomas Jefferson University believe that blocking the cell-signalling molecule could eliminate autoimmune diseases.
Abdolmohamad Rostami, study leader, said that discovery is the first step towards finding a new treatment.
"If we can try to neutralize GM-CSF by different means, for example, by trying to mimic it or trying to block the receptor for GM-CSF, we can hopefully ameliorate the disease," he explained.
This follows the development of a tool at Mayo Clinic which is able to track the progress of multiple sclerosis.
Using the device, people in hospital doctor jobs would be able to predict how fast the condition will progress in each patient, according to findings presented at the American Academy of Neurology meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.
