Using topical corticosteroids (TCS) to treat children with eczema does not have negative side effects, research has shown.
A study, published in journal Pediatric Dermatology, has found that routine, long-term usage of corticosteroids on children with eczema does not have any negative side effects that could be considered significant.
Study leader Gayle Fischer, of the University of Sydney, said: "Our results show that normal routine use of TCS does not cause skin thinning, and parents should be reassured. We hope that our work will give them the confidence to use TCS safely and effectively."
These findings may reassure worried parents, many of who are concerned that using the treatment will "thin the skin".
