The lessening of chemoradiation side effects improves brain cancer survival rates, a study has indicated.
Glioma patients who did not experience early side effects such as fatigue and loss of short-term memory were found to live, on average, four months longer than those who did, according to the study published in the British Journal of Cancer.
Researchers concluded that the manifestation of early side effects, which tend to begin soon after treatment begins, are linked to the presence of late side effects and overall survival rates.
Thomas Jefferson University researcher Yaacov Richard Lawrence said: "It is generally considered that the only way to improve survival in malignant brain tumours is to more effectively attack the tumour."
This follows news that the US Food and Drug Administration has approved a wearable system to treat patients with brain tumours that reoccur following chemotherapy.
Oncology company Novocure announced that the NovoTTF-100A System (NovoTTF) is a "safe and effective" non-invasive alternative to chemotherapy.
