An experimental Alzheimer's drug could be used to relieve chronic pain and paralysis, after research showed it could help damaged nerves to regenerate.
Scientists from Johns Hopkins found that an experimental compound used to strengthen the brain in Alzheimer's patients were able to aid the regeneration of crushed or cut nerves.
Researcher Mohamed Farah said that when nerves are damaged, their environment and target tissue often degenerates before the nerves can heal, meaning they can never fully recover.
However, if the nerves were helped to heal more quickly, they could achieve health once again.
"Anything that speeds nerve re-growth could be enormously helpful to people with nerve injuries caused by a range of injuries and diseases, from diabetic neuropathy to motorcycle accidents," he said.
Meanwhile, scientists have developed a neck patch which could stave off Alzheimer's disease.
The equipment functions by relaxing major arteries to heighten the blood flow to the brain.
