The release of stroke data from around Europe should be a "call to action" in dealing with blood pressure, the author of the study has said.
Stroke rates around Europe were found to differ, with the incidence in western Europe generally improving while that in eastern nations is worsening.
According to the findings, nations that had relatively low stroke rates at the start of the 20th century are continuing to see drops in incidence while countries such as Russia and Poland have seen further rises.
The authors believe that the figures reflect how effectively blood pressure is treated around the continent and they will be "extremely useful" for monitoring hypertension.
Josep Redon from the University of Valencia, said: "We hope that this paper will be a call to action in the face of the huge impact of stroke all over Europe."
Meanwhile, research published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association, has found that stroke patients who played on games consoles such as the Wii and the Playstation, were five times more likely to experience an improvement in motor function in their arms than those who did not.
