The bacteria that causes pneumonia and meningitis is only able to spread when the influenza virus is also present, according to new findings which could change pandemic planning.
It was also found that infection with the flu virus is also necessary for transferring the streptococcus pneumonia from one individual to another.
Dr Dimitri Diavatopoulos from the Radboud University explained that the flu virus increases the bacterial load in the nose of patients with streptococcus pneumonia, and also makes those without the bacteria more susceptible to it.
"The findings are particularly relevant to childcare centres as up to 80 per cent of children are asymptomatic carriers of S pneumonia and are more vulnerable to developing serious infections such as pneumonia or meningitis," he said.
According to NHS Choices, between 50 and 200 people for every 100,000 consult their doctor with flu-like symptoms each year. Older people, children and those with certain conditions are most at risk from the virus.
