Consumption of fruit juice could offer the same health benefits as eating whole fruit, reducing the risk of some very serious diseases, researchers have found.
A study presented at the 2011 Experimental Biology meeting revealed that drinking 100 per cent fruit juice could cut the chance of cognitive decline, cancer and cardiovascular markers.
Dianne Hyson, study author, said that fruit juices were seen to retain significant bioactive components which could promote good health and help to stave off disease.
"While it is universally accepted that fruit and vegetable intake is protective, there is not a clear consensus about the benefits of consuming the juices that are extracted from them," she stated.
Meanwhile, Mark Flannagan, chief executive of Beating Bowel Cancer, has also promoted the benefits of healthy eating.
He explained that eating plenty of fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, fish, consuming red meat in moderation and cutting alcohol intake can reduce the risk of bowel cancer.
