Resistance training fights against the loss of muscle seen in ageing, physiotherapists have said.
According to Vicky Johnston, chartered physiotherapist from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, a decline in muscle strength begins from approximately the fourth decade of life.
People who do not exercise or have certain existing health conditions could experience this process faster.
However, "it is never too late" to begin fighting this process, the expert has said. Exercising the major functional muscle groups can benefit even the "most frail".
"Resistance may be added by using body weight [by doing] semi-squats, wall press-ups and controlled sit to stand/stand to sit, exercise bands or weights," she explained.
Ms Johnston adds that it is important that those who have not exercised for a lengthy period of time should seek the advice of a physiotherapist.
Research conducted at the University of Michigan has supported this advice, finding that through resistance training, older adults can improve their ability to undertake tasks such as standing up from a chair, walking and climbing stairs.
