Video games could be used to improve the motor skills of individuals recovering from a stroke, a study has suggested.
Patients using games systems such as the Wii and the Playstation were up to five times more likely to see an improvement in their arm motor function than individuals who just received standard therapies, according to the study in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association.
Study author Dr Gustavo Saposnik underlined that between 55 and 75 per cent of stroke survivors suffer motor problems in their arm but the conventional physiotherapy and occupational therapy they are treated with provides only "modest and sometimes delayed effects".
"Virtual reality gaming is a promising and potentially useful alternative to enhance motor improvement after stroke," continued Dr Saposnik.
This comes after a key protein was uncovered by scientists at the University of Edinburgh which could improve the understanding of stroke as well as other conditions, potentially leading to new treatments for the conditions.
