West Sussex has been chosen to get a new Health and Wellbeing Board, a year earlier than government changes to the NHS system that will come into force by April 2012.
A shadow board will be set up to help determine the future of West Sussex's healthcare, and may inform the way the scheme is rolled out nationally.
As announced in the Health and Social Care Bill earlier this year, Health and Wellbeing Boards will combine the expertise of local authority councillors, healthcare representatives and commissioning consortia.
"We are well placed in West Sussex to meet the proposed health changes," said council leader Louise Goldsmith.
"Local authorities and the NHS have a strong history of working together in West Sussex. We already jointly commission many of our services together."
The board will meet for the first time in May, with key priorities including deciding how to implement £8.9 million of social care funding.
