Researchers have developed a more accurate PSA test for prostate cancer which they hope will reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies.
According to the scientists, from Northwestern Medicine, current prostate cancer screening tests often lead to over-detection and over-treatment of indolent cancer along with a high number of false positives.
However, lead investigator William Catalona says that the new test is more accurate and specific than those currently available.
"This will focus on the detection of more life-threatening prostate cancers and reduce unnecessary biopsies in men 50 years of age and older," he added.
Meanwhile, researchers at the National Cancer Institute have found that diabetes is associated with a lower incidence of prostate cancer in men, but an eight per cent increased risk of cancer in women and an 11 per cent elevated increased chance of death in women and a 17 per cent higher risk in men.
