Govt launch NHS 'listening exercise'

The government's listening exercise to promote NHS modernisation was today launched by prime minister David Cameron, deputy prime minister Nick Clegg and health secretary Andrew Lansley.
Mr Lansley announced that engagement will centre on the role of choice and competition in improving quality, ensuring public accountability and patient involvement in the new system, new arrangements for training and education and how patient care can be improved through advice from healthcare professionals.
The listening exercise is "a genuine chance to make a difference", according to Mr Cameron, who added that the NHS is Britain's "most precious national asset".
"Where there are good suggestions to improve the legislation, those changes will be made. But let me be clear, it is only through modernisation that can we protect the NHS and ensure the country has a truly world-class health service," he added.
This comes shortly after the government launched a £200 million per year Cancer Drugs Fund scheme, which aims to give patients greater access to the drugs recommended to them.
