New blood thinning drug Dabigatran etexilate significantly lessens the risk of stroke in atrial fibrillation patients, a study has found.
If passed by the European Regulators the drug, known as Pradaxa, could change the lives of those with the heart rhythm disorders, with research finding it to cut the risk of stroke by between 30 and 39 per cent.
Results presented at the annual scientific sessions of the American College of Cardiology indicate that the drug is much more effective in reducing stroke than warfarin, which is widely used to combat the condition.
Dr Peter Coleman, deputy director of research at The Stroke Association, commented: "The findings from this study provide a strong, positive backing for dabigatran etexilate which appears to be an easier treatment to manage and therefore has the potential to improve the quality of life for many people."
